Vancouver Mourns After Festival Tragedy; Support Systems Urgently Needed

The organizer of a Filipino festival in Vancouver, shattered by a devastating attack that killed 11 people, says many survivors will need ongoing care and support to heal from the trauma.

Speaking at an emotional vigil Sunday night, RJ Aquino told hundreds of mourners that the community is overwhelmed with confusion, devastation, and grief.

The attack occurred when a vehicle plowed through the vibrant celebration, turning joy into tragedy. Police have charged 30-year-old Adam Kai-Ji Lo with eight counts of second-degree murder, with more charges expected as authorities continue identifying the victims.

British Columbia’s Health Ministry reported that 32 people were treated at hospitals across the Lower Mainland, with 17 still receiving care, including several in critical or serious condition.

Aquino emphasized that many festival attendees, witnesses, and families who lost loved ones will require long-term emotional and psychological support. Efforts are already underway to create an information page that will direct people to the resources they need.

Prime Minister Mark Carney joined Premier David Eby, Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim, and MLA Mable Elmore at the vigil. Together, they placed white roses at the growing memorial before kneeling in a solemn moment of silence.

Vancouver police have stated that the incident was not an act of terrorism. Although they have yet to determine a motive, they confirmed the suspect had prior mental health interactions with authorities.

Premier Eby addressed the grieving crowd before the vigil, expressing solidarity and sympathy from across the nation. “I can’t imagine the heartbreak that all of you are feeling,” he said.

Both Eby and Sim had attended the festival earlier in the day, moments before the street lined with food trucks became the site of the horrific rampage.

Aquino warned the public to stay cautious against fraudulent fundraising efforts, noting that the Philippine Consul General’s office has already flagged potential scams. At present, no official donations are being collected, and the community is focusing on establishing verified support channels for those affected.

The accused, Adam Kai-Ji Lo, remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in court again on May 26.
