he City of Brampton invites all residents to join in commemorating Journey to Freedom Day on Saturday, April 19, 2025, a meaningful occasion that honours the resilience of Vietnamese refugees and celebrates the vibrant contributions of Vietnamese Canadians to Brampton and Canada.
Journey to Freedom Day was established nationally in 2015 through the Journey to Freedom Act, and is observed annually on April 30 to mark the exodus of Vietnamese refugees following the fall of Saigon in 1975. Known to many as “Black April Day,” it is a time to remember the lives lost and hardships endured by those who fled persecution and conflict in search of safety and freedom. It also recognizes Canada’s compassionate role in welcoming thousands of Vietnamese refugees who have since made lasting contributions to society.
In Brampton, the City will commemorate this day with a Community Flag Raising and Cultural Reception on April 19:
- 12:00 PM – Community Flag Raising at Ken Whillans Square
- 12:30 PM – Cultural Reception at the City Hall Atrium, featuring traditional Vietnamese performances and cuisine
The event is organized in partnership with the Saigon Park Group Brampton and generously supported by Algoma University.
“Journey to Freedom Day is an important time to reflect on the resilience and courage of Vietnamese refugees and to honour the profound contributions of Vietnamese Canadians to our city and country,” said Mayor Patrick Brown. “Brampton is proud to stand in solidarity with the Vietnamese community as we commemorate this significant chapter in history. I invite everyone to join us on April 19 to pay tribute, celebrate culture, and recognize the strength of those who sought freedom and built new lives in Canada.”
