RCMP say social media posts also targeted Jewish and Muslim communities
A 55-year-old Winnipeg man is facing criminal charges after allegedly posting online death threats directed at Prime Minister Mark Carney and making hateful remarks targeting Jewish and Muslim communities.
In a news release, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) said its Federal Policing National Security Enforcement Section in the Northwest Region began investigating a social media account on Jan. 16.
Police allege the individual used the platform X to make threats against the prime minister and to incite hatred toward members of Jewish and Muslim communities.
The man was arrested on Feb. 13 and has been charged with three counts of uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm.
He remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in court later this month. None of the allegations have been tested in court.
The RCMP declined further comment, citing the ongoing investigation and active court proceedings.
The case highlights growing concerns about online threats directed at public officials and communities, as law enforcement agencies continue to monitor and respond to activity they believe may pose risks to public safety.
