Political Upset in Brampton West as Amarjeet Gill Defeats Liberal Incumbent

In what is being widely regarded as a significant local political upset, Conservative Party of Canada candidate Amarjeet Gill has officially unseated Liberal incumbent Kamal Khera in the federal riding of Brampton West, ending the Liberal Party’s decade-long hold in the constituency.

According to final numbers released by Elections Canada, Gill secured 21,112 votes, accounting for 49.8% of the total votes cast, narrowly defeating Khera, who received 20,214 votes (47.7%). The vote margin of 898 votes underscores the tight nature of the contest.

Kamal Khera, a key figure in the Liberal government since her election in 2015, has served in several prominent cabinet roles, including Minister of Health, Minister of Seniors, and most recently, Minister of Diversity, Inclusion and Persons with Disabilities. Her defeat marks a notable turning point in Brampton West, historically viewed as a Liberal stronghold.

Amarjeet Gill’s win is being hailed as a breakthrough for the Conservative Party in Brampton and Peel Region, where Liberals have traditionally dominated federal races. Having previously run in the 2011 and 2014 Ontario provincial elections under the Progressive Conservative banner, Gill’s perseverance and growing support in the riding contributed to his 2025 success.

Final vote totals for other candidates in the riding are as follows:

  • Zaigham Javed (New Democratic Party): 708 votes
  • Sameera Khan (Green Party): 278 votes
  • Khawaja Amir Hassan (Centrist Party): 94 votes

While the Liberal Party appears to have gained ground in other parts of the country, the result in Brampton West signals a shifting political sentiment in Peel Region and highlights the growing competitiveness of federal races in suburban Ontario.

The official confirmation from Elections Canada affirms Amarjeet Gill as the newly elected Member of Parliament for Brampton West, bringing new representation and potentially new priorities to the riding.
