A new Fraser Institute report card on Ontario’s secondary schools shows a striking divide across the province — and some of the biggest contrasts are right here in Mississauga, Brampton and Oakville. The annual rankings, based on 2023–24 results, evaluated nearly 750 public and Catholic high schools using EQAO math scores, literacy test performance and long-term achievement trends.
This year’s list places Mississauga’s Olive Grove High School in the province’s top 10, coming in at seventh place. Oakville celebrated two top performers as well — Iroquois Ridge High School and Abbey Park High School, which tied for eighth alongside several Toronto-area schools.
But the bottom of the list also included Peel and Halton schools. West Credit Secondary School in Mississauga and Judith Nyman Secondary School in Brampton both ranked near the bottom, landing at 738 and 739, respectively.
The Fraser Institute notes that its rankings are intended to help parents compare school performance over time. Only schools with enough students writing the Grade 9 EQAO math test and the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test are included. Private and federally funded First Nations schools appear in the list only if they voluntarily administer the exams and agree to the publication of their results.
Using six indicators — from EQAO achievement to gender-based performance differences — the institute calculates a score out of 10 and a five-year average to determine final placement. Ties result in identical rankings.
