Brampton Honours Annie Bynoe With Key to the City for Transformational Leadership in Food Security

The City of Brampton will award one of its highest civic honours — the Key to the City — to community leader Annie Bynoe, the long-serving Executive Director of Knights Table, in recognition of her profound impact on food security, poverty reduction, and community support across Brampton.

The honour celebrates Bynoe’s decades of service, compassion, and unwavering dedication to helping individuals and families facing hunger, housing instability, and economic hardship. As a respected leader in social services, she has been instrumental in strengthening Brampton’s support systems at a time of unprecedented community need.

Under her leadership, Knights Table has expanded into a lifeline for thousands of residents each year. Bynoe championed innovative programs for children, youth, seniors, and families — from breakfast initiatives that ensure students start their day nourished, to specialized supports that help vulnerable individuals move toward stability and self-sufficiency.

During the pandemic, Bynoe launched the Mobile Community Kitchen, bringing hot, nutritious meals directly to neighbourhoods in crisis. She also played a pivotal role in establishing the Brampton Food Hub, a collaborative, multi-agency effort that ensures culturally appropriate food access for racialized and low-income communities. Most recently, she oversaw the acquisition of a new permanent home for Knights Table, securing the organization’s future growth and long-term impact.

Her career has been defined by servant leadership, mentorship, and a deep belief in the power and potential of every individual. She has guided hundreds of local youths, built partnerships across sectors, and inspired a wide network of volunteers and community organizations to work together for meaningful change.

Bynoe’s contributions have earned her numerous accolades, including the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal, awarded for exceptional service to community and country.

Mayor Patrick Brown said the honour reflects the gratitude of the entire city:
“Recognizing Annie Bynoe with a Key to the City is an opportunity to honour her leadership and the profound impact she has made in Brampton. Her commitment to supporting residents, advocating for food security and uplifting our most vulnerable neighbours reflects the very best of our community.”

Expressing her appreciation, Annie Bynoe said:
“My work has always been about service — creating opportunities for individuals and families to thrive. I am deeply grateful to our dedicated team, volunteers, and community partners who share this mission. Together, we are building a Brampton where compassion and collaboration create lasting change.”

The City will formally present the Key to the City as part of its ongoing celebrations of community leaders whose work strengthens Brampton’s social fabric and supports its most vulnerable residents.
