City of Brampton Hosts Langar Seva to Celebrate Sikh Heritage Month

The City of Brampton hosted a vibrant Langar Seva on April 24, 2025, as part of Sikh Heritage Month, uniting residents, leaders, and volunteers in the cherished Sikh tradition of Langar—offering free meals to all, regardless of background. The event showcased the community’s commitment to unity, equality, and selfless service, core tenets of Sikhism that align with Canada’s values of inclusivity.

The Langar Seva saw enthusiastic participation from local dignitaries and community members. Volunteers from various organizations worked tirelessly to serve meals, embodying the spirit of Seva (selfless service). Councillor Rod Power of Wards 7 & 8 presented recognition certificates to volunteers and groups for their contributions, highlighting the community’s collective effort.

“This Langar Seva is a beautiful reflection of Brampton’s diversity and the Sikh values of compassion and equality,” said Harkirat Singh, Deputy Mayor of Brampton. “It’s heartwarming to see our community come together to share not just food, but love and respect for one another.”

Councillor Navjit Brar, the first turban-wearing Sikh woman elected as a Brampton City Councillor, emphasized the event’s significance in fostering community bonds. “Langar is more than a meal; it’s a powerful symbol of unity and service,” Brar stated. “As a councillor, I’m proud to support initiatives like this that strengthen our city’s cultural fabric.”

Federal representatives also attended, underscoring the event’s importance. Kamal Khera, MP for Brampton West and Minister of Health, remarked, “The Langar Seva exemplifies the Sikh principle of giving back, which resonates deeply in Brampton. It’s a reminder of how our shared values can build stronger, more inclusive communities.”

Sonia Sidhu, MP for Brampton South, echoed similar sentiments, noting the event’s role in cultural celebration. “Sikh Heritage Month allows us to honor the contributions of Sikh Canadians,” Sidhu said. “This Langar Seva is a testament to Brampton’s vibrant diversity and the spirit of togetherness that defines our city.”

Amandeep Sodhi, the Liberal Party candidate for Brampton Centre in the upcoming federal election, highlighted the event’s alignment with her campaign priorities. “As a young candidate, I see the Langar Seva as an inspiring example of community engagement,” Sodhi shared. “It motivates me to advocate for policies that empower youth and women while celebrating our diverse heritage.”

The Langar Seva was part of a broader lineup of Sikh Heritage Month 2025 events, including the “Challenging the Darkness” exhibition at the Peel Art Gallery, Museum and Archives (PAMA). Running from April 5 to June 29, 2025, the exhibit honors Shaheed Bhai Jaswant Singh Khalra, a Sikh activist who exposed human rights abuses in Punjab during the 1990s, reflecting the Sikh principle of standing against oppression.

Other Sikh Heritage Month activities include calligraphy workshops, arts and crafts sessions, and panel discussions, all aimed at celebrating Sikh history and culture. For a full schedule of events, visit sikhheritagemonth.ca.
