Anti-Corruption Police Reviewing Allegations Amid Quebec Liberal Party Turmoil

QUÉBEC — Quebec’s anti-corruption police are reviewing allegations of wrongdoing tied to the internal crisis engulfing the Quebec Liberal Party.

Mathieu Galarneau, spokesperson for the province’s anti-corruption unit, confirmed that investigators are assessing and validating allegations before determining whether to launch a formal investigation.

The political turmoil erupted after Marwah Rizqy—then Liberal leader in the National Assembly—dismissed her chief of staff without consulting party leader Pablo Rodriguez. In response, Rodriguez removed Rizqy from her leadership duties and suspended her from caucus, citing a serious breach of trust.

The controversy deepened following a report in the Journal de Montréal that allegedly revealed text messages suggesting that supporters of Rodriguez during the leadership race received cash rewards. The messages are said to have come from unidentified sources.

Rodriguez says he welcomes the involvement of the anti-corruption unit and has also instructed the party to conduct its own internal inquiry into the allegations raised by the newspaper.
