Bondi Gunman Traced to Hyderabad as Family Denies Any Signs of Radicalisation

Australian and Indian authorities have confirmed that one of the gunmen behind the deadly Bondi Beach shooting was originally from Hyderabad, India, while his family says it had no knowledge of any extremist beliefs. Police say 50-year-old Sajid Akram, who was shot dead during the attack, and his 24-year-old son Naveed, now hospitalized in critical condition, carried out the assault that killed 15 people during a Hanukkah celebration in Sydney. Telangana police said Akram migrated to Australia in 1998, had no adverse record in India, and visited the country several times only for family reasons. Investigators are examining the pair’s month-long trip to the Philippines last November, though Indian officials said there is no evidence linking their radicalisation to India or to any local influence in Telangana. Australian police say early findings point to an Islamic State–inspired attack, citing improvised explosive devices and ISIS flags found in a vehicle linked to the suspects, while stressing that the actions reflect extremist ideology, not religion. As Australia mourns, memorials continue to grow at Bondi Beach, calls for tougher gun laws have intensified, and the country remains shaken by one of its deadliest mass shootings in decades.
