IPL Auction Shock: Cameron Green Becomes Costliest Overseas Signing in League History

The IPL 2026 auction created history as Australian all-rounder Cameron Green emerged as the most expensive overseas player ever bought in the tournament, after a fierce bidding war ended with Kolkata Knight Riders securing him for a record price. The deal surpassed the previous overseas auction record held by Mitchell Starc, although currency fluctuations mean Starc’s 2024 purchase was still higher in U.S. dollar terms. Green was bought for the equivalent of about $2.77 million, compared with Starc’s $2.98 million at the time, after the Indian rupee slipped to a record low against the dollar. Under new IPL rules, Green’s personal salary is capped, with the excess amount going to the BCCI, making him the third most expensive player overall in IPL history behind Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer. The 26-year-old, who has featured for Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bengaluru, returns after missing the 2025 season due to injury, as the blockbuster auction once again underlined the IPL’s massive global value and financial muscle.
