Ontario MPP Chris Scott Takes Leave After Domestic Assault Charges Amid Calls to Resign

Ontario MPP Chris Scott, who faces domestic violence charges, has announced he is taking a short leave from public appearances, despite mounting calls for his resignation.

Scott, elected in February to represent Sault Ste. Marie for the Progressive Conservatives, was removed from caucus shortly after his arrest last month. He is charged with assault and assault with a weapon — alleged in court documents to be a high chair. His next court appearance is scheduled for October 22.

In a statement released Thursday, Scott said he will step back from “non-essential public appearances” but remains committed to serving his constituents. “I have confidence in the criminal justice system,” he added, declining further comment on the charges.

The Ontario NDP, whose candidate narrowly lost to Scott in the recent election, has publicly called on him to resign.
