Elections Ontario has certified the final results of two provincial ridings following judicial recounts that slightly increased the winning margins in both cases.
In Mississauga-Erin Mills, Progressive Conservative incumbent Sheref Sabawy has officially retained his seat. While the initial election night tally showed Sabawy leading the Liberal candidate by just 20 votes, the recount confirmed his victory with a slightly wider margin of 23 votes.
In the northern riding of Mushkegowuk–James Bay, NDP incumbent Guy Bourgouin also saw his margin increase. Originally ahead by 4 votes over the Progressive Conservative challenger, the recount confirmed a 9-vote lead, solidifying his re-election.
“These razor-thin results underscore the importance of every vote,” said an Elections Ontario spokesperson. “Judicial recounts are a vital part of maintaining transparency and accuracy in our democratic process.”
The recounts were mandated after unofficial results from the provincial election showed margins of less than 25 votes in both ridings, triggering legal procedures to ensure the integrity of the outcomes.
Elections Ontario has now officially certified the results, concluding the final phase of the electoral process in these hotly contested ridings.
