Peel Regional Police (PRP) has unveiled an innovative and proactive Youth Engagement Strategy designed to enhance the way officers interact with youth, parents/guardians, and community partners serving young people across Mississauga and Brampton.
This comprehensive strategy, shaped through extensive consultation with local youth and community partners, will introduce several targeted initiatives. Key components include a new youth mentorship program, specialized training for PRP members on effective youth engagement, and increased support for youth experiencing hate and bias.
Chief Nishan Duraiappah highlighted the importance of this initiative, stating, “I am proud to introduce our new youth engagement strategy—a commitment to building trust, fostering understanding, and creating positive pathways for the young people in our community. Together, we aim to empower their voices, provide meaningful opportunities, and strengthen the bonds that unite us all for a safer and brighter future.”
A combination of surveys and focus groups has provided crucial insights into youth safety and police interactions in the region, guiding the development and improvement of PRP’s programs.
The strategy enhances existing successful programs such as the Youth In Policing Initiative, Young Women’s Mentorship Program—which empowers at-risk girls by fostering leadership and confidence—and the Boys to Men Program, providing guidance and positive role models for at-risk boys.
By strengthening these initiatives and adding new elements, PRP aims to nurture a positive relationship with local youth, enhancing community safety, trust, and overall well-being.
