Brampton’s transit future took a significant leap forward today as the federal Liberal government, alongside provincial and municipal leaders, announced funding support for the Hazel McCallion Light Rail Transit (LRT) Extension into downtown Brampton. The investment, channeled through the Metro-Region Agreement (MRA) stream of the Canada Public Transit Fund (CPTF), builds on Ontario’s commitment to a rapid transit tunnel, promising enhanced connectivity, economic growth, and sustainable transportation for Canada’s third-largest city.
The announcement, held in Brampton, saw MP Ruby Sahota (Brampton North), Health Minister Kamal Khera, Regional Councillors Paul Vicente and Rowena Santos, MPs Shafqat Ali and Sonia Sidhu, Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria, Mayor Patrick Brown, Liberal candidate for Brampton Centre Amandeep Sodhi, and other officials unveil plans for the transformative project. The 18-kilometre, 19-stop Hazel McCallion LRT, currently under construction from Mississauga to the Brampton Gateway Terminal, will extend an additional four kilometers into downtown Brampton, linking the urban core to regional transit networks.

Mayor Patrick Brown celebrated the milestone, stating, “Today’s announcement is a significant step forward in making the Hazel McCallion LRT Extension a reality for Brampton. As one of Canada’s fastest-growing cities, this transit solution will enable 33,000 housing units and over 17,000 jobs that will help keep pace with our rapid growth. This project will provide reliable, sustainable, and efficient transportation for our residents, connecting our downtown core to the rest of the region.”

Projected to create 17,000 jobs and support 33,000 new housing units, the LRT promises to reduce congestion with near-zero-emission vehicles, integrate with Brampton Transit, Züm, and GO Transit, and revitalize downtown Brampton as a business and innovation hub. MP Shafqat Ali, representing Brampton Centre, emphasized the employment impact, saying, “These 17,000 jobs are more than a statistic—they’re a lifeline for Brampton families, offering real opportunities and stability. This LRT is about building a stronger future for our community.” Key benefits include seamless integration with Brampton Transit, Züm, and GO Transit, reduced road congestion through electrically powered, near-zero-emission vehicles, and revitalization of the downtown core as a hub for business and innovation.

Regional Councillor Paul Vicente, Chair of the Public Works & Engineering Committee, emphasized the broader impact: “Expanding the LRT into downtown Brampton is a game-changer for our city. This investment will enhance connectivity, reduce congestion, and drive economic growth. A strong transit network is key to a better environment, supports the construction of new housing, attracts businesses, and improves the overall quality of life for our residents.”

Federal Housing, Infrastructure and Communities Minister Nathaniel Erskine-Smith reinforced the government’s role, saying, “Our government believes in public transit. We are committed to improving and growing public transit infrastructure all across Canada. Strong collaboration between federal, provincial, and municipal government is essential to achieve this goal.” The announcement aligns with Prime Minister Mark Carney’s vision of infrastructure-driven prosperity, though specifics on funding allocations remain light.
Ontario’s Minister of Transportation, Prabmeet Sarkaria, highlighted provincial support: “As Brampton grows, Premier Ford and our government have a plan to get residents the world-class transit they deserve, which is why we announced the extension of the Hazel McCallion Line into the downtown with a new tunnel that will benefit tens of thousands of riders every day. We will continue to work with our federal and municipal partners as we expand public transit and build generational projects like Highway 413.”

MP Ruby Sahota called it a “big win” for Brampton, while Health Minister Kamal Khera noted, “This isn’t just about growth—it’s about healthier communities.” Amandeep Sodhi, Liberal candidate for Brampton Centre, added, “This LRT will connect our neighborhoods and create opportunities for families across Brampton. It’s a clear sign of what we can achieve when we work together for the people.”
MPs Shafqat Ali and Sonia Sidhu focused on jobs and accessibility, with Regional Councillor Rowena Santos praising the partnership’s strength. The City of Brampton, long an advocate for the LRT extension, sees it as vital to its transportation and economic strategy. Yet, with bold projections in play, the project’s success hinges on detailed planning and execution—challenges that past transit initiatives suggest could test this multi-level collaboration.
The City of Brampton looks forward to advancing this world-class transit network, reinforcing its position as a thriving, connected urban center.
