NDP Endorses Federal Budget After Consideration, Citing Key Progressive Measures

In a decisive move that ends weeks of speculation, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh confirmed on Wednesday that his party will support the recently unveiled federal budget, ensuring the survival of the minority Liberal government. Singh’s affirmation came after a careful review of the budget, initially tabled on April 16, which features several initiatives aligned with NDP priorities.

Addressing the media, Singh highlighted significant components of the budget that swayed the NDP’s decision, including the introduction of a national school lunch program and the provision of free birth control and diabetes medications for holders of a health card. “These are initiatives that would not have been possible without the NDP’s influence,” Singh remarked, underscoring his party’s impact on the budget’s provisions.

Despite the support, Singh expressed ongoing concerns, particularly with the proposed disability benefit, fearing that provincial governments might claw it back and that it might not reach all who need it. He also noted the budget’s shortcomings in addressing the needs of Indigenous communities adequately.

The NDP’s backing comes in the context of a 2022 supply and confidence agreement with the Liberals, where the NDP pledged to support key government motions in exchange for action on major NDP initiatives such as pharmacare and dental care.

While the Conservatives and Bloc Quebecois have already declared their opposition to the budget, the NDP’s support is crucial for its passage. Singh has voiced his intention to continue holding the Liberal government accountable, stating, “We’re not going to let them off the hook. I’ve received openness to responding to the concerns I’ve raised and now we’re going to hold them to account.”

This development marks a significant step in Canadian politics, ensuring not only the survival of the Liberal government but also the advancement of several social welfare measures that are key to the NDP’s agenda.
