Travellers at Toronto Pearson International Airport faced significant disruptions on Monday as winter weather led to widespread flight delays and cancellations.
By late afternoon, 397 flights had been delayed and 105 cancelled at Canada’s busiest airport, according to FlightAware, a global flight-tracking service. Most of the disruptions were attributed to severe winter conditions affecting southern Ontario.
Of the cancelled flights, 47 were scheduled departures from Pearson, while 58 were inbound arrivals, FlightAware data showed.
The situation prompted an advisory from NAV Canada, the not-for-profit organization responsible for air traffic control services across the country. In a social media post Monday afternoon, NAV Canada said weather conditions were affecting numerous flights in the Toronto area.
“Our team is moving aircraft safely and as quickly as possible,” the organization said in a message shared on X and reposted by Toronto Pearson Airport. “Passengers: check the status of your flight with your airline.”
The region has been hit by a wintry mix of heavy snow, freezing rain, and strong winds. At one point, the storm left approximately 60,000 customers without power.
Earlier Monday, Environment and Climate Change Canada issued multiple weather warnings for southern Ontario, citing the risk of damaging winds and near-zero visibility due to fog and blowing snow.
