U.S. President Donald Trump has once again taken a swipe at Canada’s leader, referring to Prime Minister Mark Carney as the “future Governor of Canada” in a post shared on his Truth Social platform Tuesday. The comment came as Trump discussed cooperation with American state leaders on efforts to protect the Great Lakes from the spread of invasive Asian carp. The remark quickly drew attention online, as it echoed previous comments in which Trump used the same title when referring to the Canadian prime minister.
This is not the first time the U.S. president has used the phrase. In January, Trump posted a similar message while criticizing a potential trade arrangement between Canada and China, suggesting that if Carney believed Canada could become a “drop-off port” for Chinese goods entering the United States, he was mistaken. The recurring comments have been widely interpreted as political jabs aimed at the Canadian government.
When asked about Trump’s latest remark, Carney brushed it off and indicated he would not respond to every social media post or online comment directed at him. The prime minister said he was capable of handling the criticism and would not engage in public back-and-forth over statements made on social media.
