Temple University Mourns Loss of 18-Year-Old Gymnast Tyler Sabapathy
An 18-year-old Toronto college student, Tyler Sabapathy, has died after sustaining fatal injuries from a fall while celebrating the Philadelphia Eagles’ NFC Championship win over the weekend.
Temple University, where Sabapathy was a freshman majoring in Exercise and Sport Science at the College of Public Health, confirmed his passing in a statement released Tuesday night.
“The loss of a promising 18-year-old man like Tyler is both tragic and traumatic. There are no words that can make sense of it, and the entire Temple community mourns his passing. Our hearts go out to Tyler’s family, friends, classmates, and all who knew and loved him,” the statement read.
According to witnesses, Sabapathy climbed a street pole while celebrating the Eagles’ victory but lost his balance and fell, hitting his head on the sidewalk. He was immediately rushed to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday.
A Toronto native and accomplished gymnast, Sabapathy had competed in provincial, regional, and international competitions, earning more than 120 medals throughout his athletic career. He trained at the East York Gymnastics Club, dedicating 20 hours a week to training for nearly a decade.
“As a member of the university’s club gymnastics team, Tyler displayed exceptional self-discipline and work ethic, spending countless hours a week training and honing his craft. He was loved by his teammates, friends, and coaches here in Philadelphia,” Temple University noted.
His alma mater, St. Michael’s College School in Toronto, described Sabapathy as an “exceptional student-athlete, a talented gymnast, and a friend to many within the SMCS community.”
“His joy for life, spirit, and outstanding pursuit of excellence inspired us all,” the school said, adding that his passing has left the community heartbroken.
Sabapathy’s passion for exercise science stemmed from his own experiences as an athlete. In a statement on St. Michael’s website, he once reflected on his choice of study, saying:
“After sustaining many injuries throughout my career, I have begun to understand the human body in a new way. Throughout my training, I have learned about the muscles, tendons, and ligaments that are important for proper movement.”
Temple University has announced that grief counseling services are available for students and staff affected by his passing.
“We extend our thoughts, prayers, and deepest sympathies to those closest to Tyler, especially his parents and siblings. He will be deeply missed.”
The university and Sabapathy’s former schools have pledged to honor his memory and offer continued support to their communities in the wake of this tragedy.
