A Texas family is demanding answers after a high-speed Tesla crashed into a residence in Katy, Texas, killing a 76-year-old grandmother and raising fresh questions about the safety of automated driving technologies.
According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, Michael Butler was behind the wheel of a Tesla Model 3 when the vehicle, reportedly operating with a driving assistance system engaged, slammed into a brick home at high speed. The car crashed through the structure and struck Martha Avila, 76, who was inside the house at the time. She was rushed to hospital but later succumbed to her injuries.
The devastating incident has left Avila’s family grieving and searching for explanations. Her daughter, Jennifer Barbour, described the tragedy as deeply traumatic and said the family wants to understand how such a catastrophic crash could have occurred.
Investigators say Butler showed no signs of impairment and has been cooperating fully with authorities. No charges have been laid as police continue to investigate what caused the vehicle to lose control and accelerate into the home. Officials say they are examining all factors, including the role played by the automated driving assistance system.
Tesla has not publicly commented on the crash.
The incident is the latest to renew scrutiny of Tesla’s Autopilot and self-driving technologies, which have been linked to several crashes over the years, some of them fatal.
