Three members of Peel Regional Police have been disciplined and denied promotions after an internal investigation found that confidential information related to a promotional process had been improperly received and shared.
The force confirmed Monday that it launched an investigation after receiving a complaint suggesting the integrity of the promotion process had been compromised. According to Peel police, the investigation determined that a small number of participants had access to or exchanged confidential information, prompting immediate action by the organization.
As a result, none of the officers involved received promotions. Police emphasized that the matter was handled under the provisions of the Community Safety and Policing Act and was resolved through internal disciplinary measures, eliminating the need for formal hearings.
Authorities declined to provide details regarding the specific penalties imposed, citing privacy legislation. However, Peel Regional Police stressed that maintaining the integrity of promotional procedures is critical, given that those selected become future leaders responsible for public safety and the management of the organization.
The force also stated that investigators found no evidence implicating any superintendent or senior officer in the misconduct. Following the incident, Peel police conducted a review of the promotion process and introduced additional safeguards aimed at preventing similar breaches in the future.
The revelations come amid increased scrutiny of promotion systems within police services. A similar controversy involving Toronto Police in 2024 led to disciplinary action against a senior officer after several members were found to have received assistance during promotional examinations.
Peel Regional Police said the incident serves as a reminder that trust and fairness are essential to maintaining confidence both within the organization and among the communities officers serve.
While describing the misconduct as involving only a few individuals, the force underscored its commitment to ensuring that promotions are earned through merit and that the right people are selected to lead one of Canada’s largest police services.
