A quiet Montreal neighbourhood was plunged into chaos and grief Monday after a deadly shooting left a police officer and a civilian dead, another officer critically injured, and the gunman fatally shot during a massive police operation that brought parts of the city to a standstill.
The tragedy unfolded in the Côte-des-Neiges district shortly before noon, prompting authorities to issue an emergency alert warning residents of an armed and dangerous suspect and ordering people to shelter in place. Schools, parks and businesses were suddenly locked down as heavily armed officers flooded the area and residents sought cover.
Montreal police later confirmed that two officers and one civilian had been struck by gunfire. One officer succumbed to injuries while the second remained in critical condition. The suspect was killed during the confrontation, and the civilian who was injured also died.
