A quiet Montreal neighbourhood was plunged into chaos and grief Monday after a deadly shooting left a police officer and a civilian dead, another officer critically injured, and the gunman fatally shot during a massive police operation that brought parts of the city to a standstill.
The tragedy unfolded in the Côte-des-Neiges district shortly before noon, prompting authorities to issue an emergency alert warning residents of an armed and dangerous suspect and ordering people to shelter in place. Schools, parks and businesses were suddenly locked down as heavily armed officers flooded the area and residents sought cover.
Montreal police later confirmed that two officers and one civilian had been struck by gunfire. One officer succumbed to injuries while the second remained in critical condition. The suspect was killed during the confrontation, and the civilian who was injured also died.
Police Chief Fady Dagher, visibly emotional during an afternoon briefing, described the slain officer as a dedicated and passionate member of the force and called the day “a nightmare” for the Montreal police community.
Witnesses recounted scenes of panic and terror as gunfire echoed through the family-oriented neighbourhood. Parents rushed children from nearby parks, residents took shelter in their homes and businesses locked their doors. One local business owner said he saw the officer collapse after being struck and described hearing bullets whizzing past as he watched from his balcony.
Authorities later lifted the shelter-in-place order and stated that no additional suspects are currently being sought. However, investigators continued conducting searches in areas near Saint Joseph’s Oratory in Westmount to ensure there were no further threats. Officials emphasized that the immediate danger to the public had passed.
Prime Minister Mark Carney said he was horrified by the tragedy and expressed condolences to the victims, their families and first responders. Quebec Premier Christine Fréchette and Montreal Mayor Soraya Martinez Ferrada also offered their sympathies and praised the courage of emergency personnel who responded to the incident.
Investigators have not yet revealed a motive for the attack. Experts say determining what drove the gunman will require an extensive examination of his background, relationships and possible grievances. Witness reports suggesting more than one individual may have been involved are also being examined, although police maintain that no other suspects are being pursued.
The shooting has left a shaken city mourning the loss of one of its police officers and an innocent civilian, while many residents struggle to comprehend how such violence erupted in a neighbourhood known for its schools, parks and strong sense of community.
As investigators work to uncover answers, Montreal is united in grief, paying tribute to those lost and hoping for the recovery of the officer who continues to fight for her life.
