The City of Brampton is enhancing firefighter safety and emergency response capabilities after receiving a $230,230 investment from the Government of Ontario through the Fire Protection Grant program. The announcement was made at a local fire station where Graham McGregor joined Patrick Brown and members of city council to highlight the funding, which will support new safety initiatives for Brampton Fire and Emergency Services. The investment will allow the department to expand cancer prevention measures for firefighters while strengthening the city’s overall emergency response capabilities.
With the new funding, the fire service will purchase two self-contained breathing apparatus washer units along with four bunker gear washers designed to thoroughly clean protective equipment after incidents. Officials say improved decontamination of gear is a key step in reducing firefighters’ exposure to harmful substances encountered during fires and other emergencies. The equipment will help ensure that protective clothing and breathing apparatus are properly cleaned after each response, supporting long-term health and safety for firefighters.
The Fire Protection Grant is a provincial initiative that provides support to municipal fire departments across Ontario for projects focused on firefighter safety, emergency response improvements and modernization of fire service infrastructure. This year’s program will provide support to all 380 municipal fire services in the province, benefiting approximately 33,000 firefighters through investments in cancer prevention programs, equipment to respond to incidents involving lithium-ion batteries and upgrades to fire service facilities.
City leaders welcomed the funding, emphasizing that firefighters face dangerous and high-stress situations while protecting residents every day. Officials say investments in safety equipment and prevention initiatives help ensure that first responders have the tools and resources they need to carry out their work safely while continuing to protect the community. The new equipment is expected to strengthen Brampton’s efforts to safeguard firefighter health while maintaining high standards of emergency response across the city.
