Prime Minister Mark Carney joined the Sikh community in Ottawa to celebrate Vaisakhi, a significant festival marking the creation of the Khalsa in 1699. Accompanied by his wife, Diana Fox Carney, the Prime Minister visited the Ottawa Sikh Society Gurdwara, participating in traditional prayers and engaging in seva by serving meals in the Langar Hall.
“It was an honour to do seva at the Ottawa Sikh Society this morning — community and service are at the heart of today’s celebration,” Carney shared on social media.

The couple’s participation in the Langar, a communal meal open to all, underscored the Sikh principles of equality and selfless service. Their involvement was warmly received by attendees, reflecting the inclusive spirit of the festival.
Vaisakhi, celebrated every April, holds deep significance for Sikhs worldwide. It commemorates the establishment of the Khalsa by Guru Gobind Singh Ji, emphasizing values such as justice, courage, and community service.

The Prime Minister’s engagement in the festivities highlights the Canadian government’s recognition of the diverse cultural and religious traditions that enrich the nation’s social fabric.
