Police Release Video of Jewelry Theft Using Hug-and-Switch Tactic Targeting Seniors

Hamilton Police have released dramatic video footage showing how distraction thieves are tricking unsuspecting victims — often seniors — into handing over their jewelry without realizing it.

The incident under investigation occurred around 3:30 p.m. on Sept. 8 in the Flamborough area, when a woman approached the victim at home, pretending to know her.

“During the interaction, the suspect embraced the victim with a hug and kiss while placing fake jewelry around her neck. At the same time, she unclasped and stole the victim’s real gold necklace,” police said.

The suspect is described as a woman about 40 years old, 5-foot-7, with a medium build. She was last seen leaving the area in a dark-coloured vehicle with front-end damage.

Police say distraction thefts have surged in Hamilton, rising from just 9 cases in 2021 to 54 in 2024. So far this year, 43 incidents have already been reported between January and August.

“This tactic — commonly used against seniors — often involves suspects offering jewelry, hugs, or thanks for directions as a way to get close and steal valuables,” police warned.

  • Be wary of strangers who insist on hugging you or giving you jewelry.
  • Decline unsolicited gifts or physical gestures from people you don’t know.
  • Keep valuable jewelry secured and avoid wearing expensive items when alone in public spaces.
  • If you feel uncomfortable or pressured, leave the area and call police.

Police are asking anyone who can identify the suspect in the video to contact the Division 30 Criminal Investigation Branch at 905-546-3851, or submit an anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at crimestoppershamilton.com.
