Police-Involved Shooting at Pearson Airport Leaves One Dead, Triggers SIU Probe

A curbside altercation between a group of people known to one another at Toronto Pearson International Airport ended in tragedy Thursday morning when police shot and killed a man who abruptly pulled a gun, according to Peel Regional Police Chief Nishan Duraiappah.

The incident unfolded just before 7 a.m. outside Terminal 1 in the departures area. Speaking to media shortly afterward, Duraiappah emphasized that the shooting was confined to a single vehicle and did not pose any threat to airport infrastructure or ongoing operations.

Police were initially called to the scene by a member of the public who reported a dispute among two or three individuals. The individuals involved had reportedly arrived at Pearson for travel purposes. Officers stationed at the airport quickly responded to assist security personnel already attempting to manage the situation.

While the exact nature of the conflict is unclear, Duraiappah said three officers attempted to deescalate the encounter when one of the individuals suddenly drew a firearm. Two of the officers responded by discharging their weapons. Despite immediate life-saving efforts by police and paramedics, the man — described as 30 years old — was pronounced dead at the scene.

Duraiappah expressed relief that no officers were injured and confirmed the province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is now handling the case. The SIU is tasked with investigating any incident involving police where serious injury or death occurs.

The agency confirmed the man was in an SUV at the time and had drawn a firearm shortly after police arrived. Six investigators and three forensic specialists have been assigned to the case. The SIU is asking anyone with video footage, photos, or information to come forward.

As of now, the name of the deceased and further details about the incident have not been released. The investigation is ongoing.
