Peel Region’s new approach to water and wastewater billing could lead to savings for residents of Mississauga and Brampton. The billing system has been restructured to include a fixed service delivery charge and a variable consumption charge.
The introduction of a service delivery charge aims to cover the bulk of fixed costs, allowing the variable rate for water consumption to be reduced. This charge reflects the actual volume of water used during each billing period.
Over 80% of the fixed costs associated with water delivery and wastewater management are covered by the service delivery charge. These costs remain consistent regardless of the amount of water used.
The new billing model introduces a two-tier rate system for residents in single-unit homes. A lower rate applies to basic water usage up to 50 cubic meters, while higher consumption above this threshold is billed at a higher rate. Residents in multi-unit buildings will see no change in their billing structure, maintaining a single rate for water consumption. Similarly, businesses, including those in the industrial, commercial, and institutional sectors, will continue with a single consumption rate.
