In a significant move to safeguard national security, the Canadian government has ordered the dissolution of TikTok Technology Canada Inc., the Canadian business of the popular social media platform TikTok. Industry Minister François-Philippe Champagne announced that the decision follows a thorough national security review of ByteDance Ltd., the Chinese company behind TikTok. The order targets the Canadian business entity but does not block Canadians’ access to the TikTok app or its content-creation features.
Champagne emphasized the importance of cybersecurity, urging Canadians to protect their personal information and consult guidelines from the Canadian Centre for Cyber Security. The action, taken under the Investment Canada Act, reflects Canada’s stance on mitigating risks associated with foreign investments. The federal government reiterated its openness to foreign investments but affirmed a commitment to act when national security is at stake.
