Ontario’s Beloved Groundhog Wiarton Willie Dies One Month After Predicting Early Spring

Ontario’s famous weather-predicting groundhog Wiarton Willie has died just weeks after making his annual Groundhog Day prediction. Officials from the Town of South Bruce Peninsula confirmed the news Tuesday, saying the beloved animal passed away peacefully in his sleep roughly three years after assuming the role of the community’s official weather prognosticator. Willie had recently emerged from his burrow on Feb. 2 during the town’s traditional Groundhog Day celebration in Wiarton, where he did not see his shadow and predicted an early spring.

Town officials described Willie as a curious and charismatic groundhog who charmed residents and visitors alike during his time as the town’s symbolic forecaster. The groundhog was part of a long-standing Canadian tradition in which a small number of animals play the role of “meteorologist” by predicting the arrival of spring during winter festivities. The Wiarton celebration, which dates back decades, has become a well-known seasonal event that attracts visitors from across the region.

The current Willie began serving as the town’s weather forecaster in 2023 after the previous groundhog passed away in 2021. Local officials say the town will soon begin searching for a new groundhog to continue the tradition and carry on the legacy that has helped place Wiarton on the map during the coldest months of the year. The community noted that while the loss of Willie is deeply felt, the memories and spirit of the long-running winter tradition will continue.
