The Ontario government, under the leadership of Premier Doug Ford, is investing $84.2 million to build a new Mount Pleasant Secondary School in Brampton West. The project, announced by Amarjot Sandhu, MPP for Brampton West, will create 1,660 secondary student spaces and 73 licensed child care spaces, supporting local families and addressing the region’s rapid growth.
This initiative is part of the province’s $1.3 billion Capital Priorities Program, which aims to expand educational infrastructure and provide modern, well-equipped learning environments across Ontario.
“This $84.2 million investment in Mount Pleasant Secondary School is amazing news for families in Brampton West,” said Amarjot Sandhu, MPP for Brampton West. “This project will enhance education opportunities, provide modern learning spaces, and ensure that our community has the resources needed to accommodate growth.”
Minister of Education Jill Dunlop emphasized the importance of accessible education:
“As a mother, I understand that a local school is the heart of a community. It is crucial for young families to have a school close to home. Our government is proud to deliver this new school for Brampton families, alongside increased funding, staffing, and a back-to-basics focus on reading, writing, and math.”
The government’s continued investment in education and child care will add more than 25,000 new student spaces and over 1,600 child care spaces across Ontario.
“Our government is investing in new schools and improved infrastructure to support Ontario’s students, families, and growing communities,” said Kinga Surma, Minister of Infrastructure. “This is part of our historic $190 billion infrastructure investment over the next decade to ensure Ontarians have access to modern and well-equipped facilities.”
The new Mount Pleasant Secondary School will be located at Remembrance Road & Thornbush Boulevard in Brampton.
The Peel District School Board welcomed the funding, emphasizing its significance for students:
“As the Mount Pleasant community continues to grow, this funding ensures Peel students will have access to a modern, well-equipped learning environment that meets their needs and inspires their potential,” said Rashmi Swarup, Director of Education, Peel District School Board.
The Ontario government’s Better Schools and Student Outcomes Act, 2023 ensures that the public education system prioritizes fundamental skills such as reading, writing, and math while improving accountability, transparency, and efficiency in school construction projects.
As part of the Canada-Wide Early Learning and Child Care system, the government is also making child care more affordable and accessible. Effective January 1, 2025, child care fees will be capped at $22 per day for families enrolled in the program.
