The nearly five-week strike by more than 10,000 college support staff across Ontario appears to be coming to an end after the union reached a tentative agreement with the province’s 24 colleges.
The Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU), which represents the workers, announced that picket lines would come down today and details of the proposed settlement would be presented to members this afternoon. Support staff are expected to return to work on Thursday.
While the specific terms of the settlement have not yet been made public, the strike—launched on September 11—was driven by demands for better wages, improved benefits, and stronger job security. OPSEU emphasized that job security was a key issue amid ongoing campus closures, program cuts, and layoffs affecting the college sector.
The tentative agreement marks a significant step toward restoring normal operations at Ontario’s 24 colleges, bringing relief to students and staff impacted by the strike.
