More than a decade after a devastating fire brought an end to one of Brampton’s most beloved sports facilities, the city says the new Victoria Park Arena is steadily taking shape and remains on schedule to welcome residents in 2027.
Located at 20 Victoria Crescent, the original arena had served as a cornerstone of Brampton’s sporting community since the late 1960s, hosting generations of junior hockey and lacrosse players before a fire forced its closure and eventual demolition. After years of uncertainty and the costly removal of the aging structure, construction on a modern replacement is now well underway.
The new $43-million facility is being designed as a multi-purpose sports and community hub. Unlike its predecessor, the arena will feature a hardwood dry-floor surface capable of accommodating box lacrosse, ball hockey, indoor field hockey and other activities. The building will include six team dressing rooms, meeting and coaching spaces, a referee room and a large multi-purpose area for community programming.
A second-floor mezzanine overlooking the playing surface will provide seating for approximately 500 spectators, while landscaping and site improvements will create a more inviting public space. The facility will also become the permanent home of the Brampton Sports Hall of Fame, celebrating the achievements and contributions of local athletes and community leaders.
City officials say construction reached a significant milestone earlier this month and remains on track for completion in the fall of 2027. Mayor Patrick Brown said the new arena will honour the history of the original facility while providing residents with a modern and accessible gathering place for recreation and community events.
The project has not been without challenges. Initially budgeted at just under $29 million, costs climbed by more than 50 per cent due to inflation, rising prices for construction materials, labour shortages and fluctuating labour rates. Despite the increased cost, city officials say the investment will provide lasting benefits for generations to come.
Ward 7 and 8 Councillor Rod Power said the arena and Sports Hall of Fame will create a space where Brampton can celebrate its sporting heritage while promoting recreation, accessibility and community pride.
For many residents, the return of Victoria Park Arena represents more than just the construction of a building. It marks the revival of a cherished landmark and the beginning of a new chapter for a facility that has long held a special place in Brampton’s sporting history.
