Dubai is set to welcome its most expensive school, as GEMS Education, one of the world’s largest private school groups, prepares to open the GEMS School of Research and Innovation in Dubai Sports City.
With an investment of $100 million, the school will offer state-of-the-art facilities and an elite international curriculum, positioning it as one of the highest-fee schools globally.
The driving force behind this ambitious project is Sunny Varkey, an education entrepreneur whose roots trace back to Kerala, India.
Varkey’s parents, Mariam and KS Varkey, were teachers in Kerala before they moved to Dubai and founded Our Own English High School in 1968. As the school expanded, Sunny Varkey took over operations, transforming it into a world-class education network catering to diverse nationalities, including Indian, Pakistani, and British expatriates.
In 2000, Varkey established GEMS Education, which now manages elite schools across multiple countries, offering premium educational experiences.
The GEMS School of Research and Innovation is expected to set new benchmarks in premium education in the UAE. With its cutting-edge infrastructure and a curriculum tailored to future global leaders, the school will attract elite families seeking top-tier education for their children.
Although Mukesh Ambani and Gautam Adani have made high-profile investments in education and infrastructure, this project has no connection to their business empires.
While exact annual tuition fees have not yet been disclosed, it is expected to surpass the fees of existing top-tier schools in the UAE, making it one of the most exclusive educational institutions in the Gulf region.
With this $100 million investment, Sunny Varkey and GEMS Education continue to solidify their global leadership in premium education, ensuring that Dubai remains a hub for world-class learning.
