India Media Highlights Diplomatic Expulsions as Analysts Eye International Responses

India’s leading newspapers are focusing on the escalating diplomatic conflict with Canada, which saw six diplomats from each country expelled, following Canadian accusations linking Indian government agents to crimes on Canadian soil.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) issued a public warning on Monday, citing a surge in crimes, including murder and extortion, allegedly connected to Indian government agents. Canadian officials claim to have presented evidence to India over the weekend, only to face a lack of cooperation. In response, Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly declared the diplomats persona non grata under the Vienna Convention, one of the severest penalties available.

India has denied any government involvement in the alleged crimes and retaliated by expelling six Canadian diplomats.

The diplomatic fallout has captured front-page coverage in major Indian publications such as the Times of India and the Indian Express. Vina Nadjibulla, vice-president of research at the Asia Pacific Foundation, noted that global attention will now shift to how Canada’s allies, particularly the U.S., respond to the unfolding situation.

“The U.S. reaction is going to be crucial. For Canada to gain any cooperation or accountability from India, India needs to feel pressure,” Nadjibulla explained.

She also emphasized the rarity of expelling diplomats over accusations of criminal behavior, especially when dealing with a major international player like India.

The tensions escalated last month when Prime Minister Justin Trudeau revealed that Canadian intelligence was investigating credible evidence linking India to the assassination of Sikh leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia in 2023. Nadjibulla pointed out that Canada has now made its position clear by presenting evidence to India.

The diplomatic spat could have serious implications for both nations’ public safety and national security, with Nadjibulla warning that Canada is navigating uncharted territory in its relationship with India.

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh is expected to address the media later today, calling for sanctions and measures to prevent a Hindu group accused of spreading hate from operating in Canada.

As the situation develops, the international community, particularly Canada’s closest allies, are expected to weigh in, potentially altering the course of this diplomatic standoff.
