Day 600 of Gaza War: Death Toll Surpasses 54,000 as Aid Efforts Face Renewed Obstacles
On the 600th day of Israel’s war on Gaza, the humanitarian toll continues to climb, with at least 79 Palestinians reported killed and 163 wounded in the last 24 hours alone, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. The total number of deaths has now reached a staggering 54,056, with more than 123,000 others injured since the conflict began on October 7, 2023.
The ministry noted that its latest figures do not include casualties from Gaza’s North Governorate, as access to hospitals and sites of attacks remains nearly impossible for emergency teams. Many victims remain buried under rubble or stranded in areas unreachable by ambulance and civil defence crews.
The war, triggered by Hamas-led attacks on southern Israel, has since displaced nearly all of Gaza’s population. Over 400 Israeli soldiers have also died in the fighting, and despite intermittent ceasefires, large-scale assaults have continued—most recently resuming with devastating intensity on March 18.
International frustration with the situation continues to mount. Multiple countries, including Germany and Finland, are now urging stronger pressure on Israel to allow greater humanitarian access. Pakistan, Jordan, and Qatar have condemned recent airstrikes on schools-turned-shelters and the storming of Al-Aqsa Mosque by an Israeli minister.
Meanwhile, the future of Gaza remains uncertain. Former U.S. President Donald Trump has floated the idea of an American-led administration in Gaza, but Arab nations have proposed an alternative governance plan that has received support from the UK and other allies.
Seven prisoner swaps between Hamas and Israel have taken place so far, involving the exchange of 25 hostages, bodies, and over 1,700 detainees.
Reconstruction efforts, when possible, will face an uphill battle. Entire neighbourhoods have been flattened, essential infrastructure lies in ruins, and only six UNRWA health centres remain operational in the entire enclave. UN officials have described the living conditions in Gaza as catastrophic and rapidly worsening.
