In a thrilling conclusion to the Under-18 Men’s World Hockey Championship, Canada clinched its fifth title with a remarkable 6-4 comeback victory over the United States, thanks to a stellar performance by Gavin McKenna. The 16-year-old forward from Whitehorse, Yukon, scored three goals and added an assist, capping his performance with an empty-net goal to complete his hat trick.
The final, held on Sunday, saw Canada rebound from an early 3-1 deficit with a powerful display in the third period. Additional goals from Cole Beaudoin and Tij Iginla in the final frame helped secure the victory. Ryder Ritchie also contributed with a key goal in the second period.
Canadian goalie Carter George was formidable in net, making 31 saves to ensure the win. The team’s disciplined play was evident as they incurred only eight minutes in penalties compared to the American’s 31.
McKenna praised his team’s effort and spirit, highlighting the key role of teamwork and strategy, especially on the power play, which proved crucial in their victory. “The U.S played really well, but our preparation on the power play all tournament came up big today,” McKenna remarked.
In the bronze medal game earlier in the day, Sweden secured a 4-0 win over Slovakia, with Love Harenstam delivering a shutout performance.
This championship marks a significant achievement for Canadian hockey, demonstrating the country’s enduring talent and sportsmanship at the junior levels.
