Brampton Fire Services Urges Residents to Put Safety First as Outdoor Season Begins

As warmer weather returns and residents head outdoors for barbecues, celebrations and family gatherings, the City of Brampton is reminding the community that fire safety must remain a top priority throughout the busy outdoor season.

Brampton Fire and Emergency Services has launched its seasonal fire safety campaign, offering practical advice to help residents prevent avoidable fires while enjoying spring and summer activities.

Officials say outdoor cooking equipment such as barbecues and smokers should be inspected before use to ensure they are clean, working properly and positioned a safe distance from homes, railings and other combustible materials. A quick check before lighting up can help prevent serious incidents.

The department is also stressing the importance of never leaving cooking unattended. Unsupervised cooking remains one of the leading causes of residential fires, and even a brief distraction can allow a small flare-up to become a dangerous emergency.

Residents who smoke outdoors are being asked to dispose of cigarette materials responsibly. Carelessly discarded cigarette butts can easily ignite dry grass, balcony surfaces, planters or nearby debris, especially during warmer and drier conditions.

The city is also reminding residents that open-air burning is not permitted in Brampton without proper authorization. Anyone planning activities involving open flames is encouraged to review local regulations and choose safer alternatives whenever possible.

Fireworks remain prohibited in Brampton under the city’s Fireworks By-law, except during authorized City-led events. Officials note that penalties for violations range from $500 to $1,000 and can rise significantly, with fines reaching up to $100,000 if prosecuted through the courts.

For those hosting guests at home, fire officials recommend checking that working smoke alarms are installed on every level of the house and ensuring the family has a clear fire escape plan. These simple precautions can make a critical difference in an emergency.

The campaign highlights that fire prevention is a shared responsibility. By making informed choices and staying aware of potential hazards, residents can help protect their homes, neighbours and the wider community while enjoying the season safely.
