From Nargis to Mulberry: Brampton Council Approves 16 New Street Names

Brampton City Council has officially approved 16 new street names, adding them to the city’s master list for future residential and commercial developments. The decision came during the committee of council meeting held on June 18.

The newly approved names are: Nargis, Modhera, Horgan, Dureen, Dante, Emma, Giorgia, Del Duca, Tersigni, Macera, Mulberry, Hewetson, Wedgewood, Basswood, Francavilla, and Balwinder.

According to a staff report, Brampton residents and developers regularly submit proposed street names, which are reviewed through a multi-stage process before making it to council. The city’s traffic planning department first evaluates the names for compliance with technical and policy guidelines. Once cleared, the names are assessed by the city’s equity office to ensure cultural and social appropriateness.

Final approval lies with the Region of Peel’s naming committee, which ensures no duplication or confusion exists with street names already in use across Brampton, Mississauga, and Caledon—a key concern for emergency response teams.

Once approved, the names are added to the Street Name Master List, from which developers can choose on a first come, first served basis. However, there’s no guarantee how long a name will stay in the database before it’s selected for use.

The city encourages all residents to get involved in the naming process by suggesting names for public streets, parks, and other municipal assets. Submissions can be made through a form on the city’s website and must align with Brampton’s asset naming policy, last updated in 2021. Once reviewed and deemed appropriate, names may be included in future reports to council for formal consideration.
