BRAMPTON, Ont. — The City of Brampton is rolling out several program updates, regulatory changes and service improvements that will take effect January 1, 2026, aimed at enhancing community safety and service delivery.
Here’s what residents and businesses need to know:
Residential Rental Licensing (RRL) Program Expanded
Brampton is extending and strengthening its Residential Rental Licensing pilot for another three years. Beginning Jan. 1, all rental property owners citywide must apply for or renew a licence annually. Applications will remain free.
Landlords will also be required to complete a mandatory online learning module to demonstrate knowledge of city rental regulations before a licence is issued.
Higher Fines for By-law Violations
By-law penalties will increase for offences including parking, property standards, snow clearing and rental housing. Fines will now range from $50 for a first offence to as much as $1,500 for repeat violations.
Residents are encouraged to familiarize themselves with local by-laws and address issues promptly to avoid escalating penalties. More information is available at brampton.ca/bylaws.
New Carbon Monoxide Alarm Requirements
Under updated Brampton Fire and Emergency Services rules, carbon monoxide alarms will be required beside all sleeping areas and on every storey of a home.
Residents should install and test alarms monthly, replace batteries annually, and maintain fuel-burning appliances and vents. Anyone hearing an alarm or experiencing symptoms of CO poisoning should leave immediately and call 911. Details are available at brampton.ca/carbonmonoxideweek.
