Carney Embarks on 9-Day Asia Trip to Boost Trade and Defence Ties

Prime Minister Mark Carney will travel to Malaysia, Singapore, and South Korea from October 24 to November 1 on a nine-day mission focused on expanding Canada’s trade partnerships and advancing defence cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region.

Carney will begin his trip in Kuala Lumpur, where he’ll attend the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit and meet with Malaysia’s prime minister to discuss strengthening bilateral trade relations.

He will then head to Singapore to hold talks with the country’s prime minister and regional business leaders, with a focus on removing trade barriers and attracting global investment.

The final leg of his trip takes him to Gyeongju, South Korea, where he will participate in a meeting of Asia-Pacific economic leaders. Carney is also expected to visit the Hanwha Ocean shipyard, one of two finalists competing for a major contract to build Canada’s next generation of submarines — a key component of the country’s evolving defence strategy.

The visit underscores Ottawa’s push to deepen economic and security partnerships in Asia as part of its broader Indo-Pacific engagement strategy.
