Canada Seeks Deeper Ties With Japan as Carney Concludes 10-Day Trip

Mark Carney has arrived in Japan, marking the final stop of his 10-day Indo-Pacific tour that also included visits to India and Australia.

The trip comes shortly after Carney delivered a widely discussed speech at the World Economic Forum, where he called on middle-power countries to work together to balance the influence of dominant global powers.

During his visit to Australia, Carney promoted the idea of closer collaboration among such nations. Anthony Albanese publicly expressed support for Carney’s call for stronger cooperation among middle powers.

In Japan, Carney is scheduled to meet with Sanae Takaichi, the country’s first female prime minister, who was recently re-elected in a landslide victory earlier this month.

Experts say Canada’s relationship with Japan has grown significantly in recent years. Vina Nadjibulla of the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada said Canada’s Indo-Pacific strategy has helped deepen ties between the two countries.

She described the partnership as a “full spectrum relationship,” highlighting strong cooperation in areas such as trade, commercial investment, energy and critical minerals, as well as shared democratic values and strong people-to-people connections.

Carney’s visit to Japan concludes his diplomatic trip aimed at strengthening Canada’s economic and strategic partnerships across the Indo-Pacific region.
