TikTok will be permitted to continue operating in Canada following the conclusion of a federal national security review, but the platform must meet several new conditions aimed at protecting Canadians. Industry Minister Mélanie Joly announced that the decision allows the social media company TikTok to maintain a physical presence in the country while implementing stronger safeguards, particularly for minors and for the personal data of Canadian users. The decision also preserves jobs linked to the company’s Canadian operations. The move marks a significant reversal from a 2024 directive that required TikTok to shut down its offices in Canada over national security concerns. That order was later set aside by a Federal Court judge last month, allowing the company to continue operating while the government carried out a renewed review of the situation. According to Joly, federal officials will closely monitor whether the platform complies with the new requirements and may introduce additional measures in the future to improve online safety, especially for young Canadians who use social media.
