Brampton Cheers Federal Funding for Hazel McCallion LRT Extension and Rapid Transit Tunnel with Backing from MPs Maninder Sidhu and Shafqat Ali

The City of Brampton is celebrating a major federal funding announcement made on March 21, 2025, to advance the Hazel McCallion Light Rail Transit (LRT) Extension into downtown Brampton. Supported through the Metro-Region Agreement (MRA) stream of the Canada Public Transit Fund (CPTF), this investment marks a pivotal moment for Ontario’s third-largest city, promising a future of efficient, eco-friendly, and dependable transit for its residents.

This groundbreaking collaboration between federal and provincial governments will drive the creation of a rapid transit tunnel, enhancing Brampton’s transit system and strengthening its bustling urban core. As one of Canada’s fastest-growing cities, Brampton views this project as a critical component of its plan to bolster infrastructure and meet the demands of its expanding population.

Currently under construction, the Hazel McCallion LRT spans 18 kilometers with 19 stops, linking Mississauga to the Brampton Gateway Terminal. The newly funded four-kilometer extension will stretch into downtown Brampton, weaving the city’s heart into the regional transit network and creating new opportunities for residents and local businesses.

Mr. Shafqat Ali, MP for Brampton Centre, expressed his enthusiasm: “As a proud representative of Brampton, I am ecstatic about this federal investment in the Hazel McCallion LRT Extension. It’s a game-changer for our residents—connecting downtown like never before, boosting housing, driving economic growth, and promoting sustainability. Seeing federal and provincial support come together for this vision is a win for our community.”

Patrick Brown, Mayor of Brampton, shared his thoughts: “This federal investment is a milestone for Brampton’s transit evolution. The Hazel McCallion LRT Extension will fuel 33,000 new housing units and 17,000 jobs, matching our city’s rapid rise. It’s a vital link for downtown and a sustainable win—huge thanks to Minister Erskine-Smith and the federal team.”

Maninder Sidhu, MP for Brampton East, added: “This investment is a testament to Brampton’s growing importance and the federal government’s commitment to our community. The Hazel McCallion LRT Extension will transform how we move, live, and thrive, ensuring Brampton remains a connected and vibrant city for generations to come.”

Highlights of the Initiative:

  • Stronger Connections: Seamless integration with Brampton Transit, Züm, GO Transit, and beyond.
  • Less Gridlock: Encouraging transit use to ease pressure on busy roads.
  • Sustainable Impact: Electric-powered LRT vehicles with minimal emissions.
  • Economic Boom: Projected to unlock 33,000 new homes and 17,000 jobs through urban revitalization.

Brampton has tirelessly advocated for the LRT extension as a cornerstone of its transportation and economic roadmap. Paired with Ontario’s pledge to fund the rapid transit tunnel, this project will solidify Brampton’s position as a dynamic hub for innovation and growth, delivering world-class transit solutions to its residents.
