In a stunning electoral outcome, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has clinched a decisive victory in the Delhi Assembly Elections, marking the party’s first majority win in the capital’s legislature in over two decades. The results ousted the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) from power, ending its ten-year rule.
The BJP secured 48 seats in the 70-member assembly, while AAP won 22 seats, a sharp decline from its 62-seat landslide victory in 2020. The Indian National Congress (INC), once a dominant force in Delhi, failed to make a significant comeback.
In a major political upset, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and his deputy Manish Sisodia lost their seats. Kejriwal, who spearheaded AAP’s rise to power through pro-poor welfare policies and an anti-corruption movement, accepted the verdict and congratulated the BJP in a video statement.
“We accept the verdict and congratulate the BJP,” Kejriwal said.
AAP’s senior leader Atishi, however, retained her seat and is expected to play a key role in the party’s future strategy.
Supporters of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s BJP erupted in celebrations outside party headquarters in Delhi, waving flags and chanting slogans.
Home Minister Amit Shah, a key strategist behind the BJP’s campaign, stated:
“This victory is a sign of the people’s faith in Prime Minister Modi’s vision of progress. People can’t be misled with lies every time.”
Modi, expressing his gratitude to the people of Delhi, took to social media to declare:
“We will leave no stone unturned in ensuring the overall development of Delhi and making the lives of residents better.”
This victory is seen as a significant boost for the BJP, which struggled to win an outright majority in the 2024 General Elections but formed the government through coalition alliances. The Delhi win follows BJP’s recent successes in Haryana and Maharashtra state elections, further solidifying its hold over key regions.
Political analyst Rahul Verma from the Centre for Policy Research noted that the BJP’s return to power in Delhi “puts the party back in a very strong position.”
Several factors contributed to BJP’s success, including:
- Economic policies: The reduction of income tax in the recent Union Budget appealed to Delhi’s large middle-class voter base.
- Development promises: Both Modi and Kejriwal campaigned on improving schools, healthcare, electricity, and financial support for women, but voters ultimately backed BJP’s broader economic and national governance vision.
- Corruption allegations: Kejriwal and several AAP leaders, including Manish Sisodia, were arrested last year in connection with a liquor policy corruption case. Though they were released on bail, the scandal tainted AAP’s clean governance image.
Despite intense campaigning, Delhi’s persistent air pollution crisis—one of the world’s worst—was largely absent from major political debates. The toxic smog, which exceeds WHO safety limits by up to 60 times, continues to be a severe public health concern.
The BJP’s return to power in Delhi marks a pivotal shift in the capital’s political landscape and poses serious challenges for AAP’s future. With the party’s stronghold weakened, the next steps for Kejriwal and his party remain uncertain.
Meanwhile, BJP now faces the responsibility of delivering on its development promises, especially tackling pollution, infrastructure, and governance issues in the national capital.
