Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is firmly asserting that his leadership of the Liberal Party is not in jeopardy, even as discontent within his caucus grows. A group of Liberal MPs is reportedly preparing to confront Trudeau on Wednesday, with the hope of persuading him to step aside before the next election.
On Tuesday, as he entered a routine meeting with his cabinet ministers, Trudeau dismissed concerns about his leadership. While several cabinet members have stood by Trudeau, calling for unity, reports indicate that a number of Liberal MPs have endorsed a letter urging him to step down.
The exact number of MPs supporting the letter or the precise content of their message remains unclear. So far, Charlottetown MP Sean Casey is the only Liberal member to publicly confirm signing the letter calling for Trudeau’s resignation.
However, not everyone is aligned with the move. Immigration Minister Marc Miller sharply criticized the MPs’ efforts, describing them as “garbage.” He argued that the internal dissent is a distraction from the party’s focus on countering Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre and his growing political momentum.
As Trudeau faces mounting pressure, the outcome of the upcoming caucus meeting could play a crucial role in determining his leadership and the future direction of the Liberal Party.
