Carney Launches Indo-Pacific Push with High-Stakes Trade Tour to India, Australia and Japan

Mark Carney is embarking on a nine-day trade mission to India, Australia and Japan as Canada looks to deepen economic ties across the Indo-Pacific and lessen its dependence on the United States.

The Prime Minister’s Office confirmed Monday that Carney will travel to Mumbai first, where he is scheduled to meet with Narendra Modi and prominent business leaders. Discussions are expected to focus on strengthening bilateral trade and expanding investment opportunities between the two countries.

Carney will then head to Canberra, where he will address both houses of Australia’s Parliament — becoming the first Canadian prime minister in two decades to do so. He is also set to hold talks with Anthony Albanese, with defence co-operation and artificial intelligence development among the key agenda items.

The final stop on the tour will be Tokyo, where Carney will meet Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae. Talks in Japan are expected to centre on clean energy partnerships, access to critical minerals and strengthening food security supply chains.

The trip signals Ottawa’s continued effort to diversify trade relationships and expand Canada’s footprint in some of the world’s fastest-growing markets. With geopolitical tensions and economic uncertainties reshaping global commerce, the government is positioning the Indo-Pacific as a central pillar of its long-term trade strategy.
