$250,000 in Cannabis Seized at Toronto Pearson Airport: Woman Charged with Drug Smuggling

A 26-year-old woman faces drug smuggling charges after border officials at Toronto Pearson Airport in Mississauga seized nearly $250,000 worth of cannabis hidden in luggage bound for the United Kingdom.

According to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), the seizure occurred on October 23 when Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) officers discovered 62 kilograms of cannabis concealed in baggage destined for a flight to London.

The confiscated drugs have an estimated street value of $248,000. Following the discovery, CBSA officers arrested the traveler and transferred her to the RCMP Airport Detachment for further investigation.

Charges and Legal Consequences

The accused, Justyne Carmen Burger-Samules, has been charged under the Cannabis Act with exportation contrary to the law. She is scheduled to appear in court on December 5, 2024.

The RCMP emphasized the serious legal implications of transporting cannabis internationally. “Although cannabis is decriminalized in Canada, it is still illegal to carry any amount of cannabis on international flights and amounts exceeding personal use on domestic flights,” said RCMP Insp. John McMath, officer in charge of the Pearson Airport Detachment.

The RCMP also noted that the penalty for cannabis importation into the United Kingdom is severe, with potential prison sentences of up to 14 years.

Cooperation to Combat Drug Smuggling

This seizure highlights the strong collaboration between the RCMP and the CBSA to address issues such as drug smuggling at Canada’s busiest airport.

“The partnership between law enforcement agencies is critical in ensuring the safety and security of our borders and combating illegal activities like drug trafficking,” said McMath.
