No Major Gas Price Hikes Expected for Family Day Travelers in Ontario

If you’re planning a road trip over the Family Day long weekend, you might be wondering whether to fill up your tank now or wait. According to energy analyst Dan McTeague, the good news is that gas prices aren’t expected to change significantly between now and Monday.

McTeague, president of Canadians for Affordable Energy, has been tracking gasoline price trends since the 1990s. He predicts a two-cent increase per litre on Thursday, followed by a two-cent drop on Friday, meaning prices should remain stable leading into the weekend.

Despite the lack of major fluctuations in the coming days, Ontario drivers are paying about 8 to 10 cents more per litre compared to this time last year. McTeague attributes the increase to two key factors:

  • The weaker Canadian dollar, which has added about six cents per litre to fuel costs.
  • The April 2024 carbon tax increase, which has contributed an additional four cents per litre.

For those looking to save at the pump, here are some useful resources:

  • GasWizard.ca – McTeague’s website provides gas price predictions.
  • GasBuddy.com – Find the lowest gas prices in your area.
  • Ontario’s Motor Fuel Prices Report – Learn more about fuel price trends.

With no significant price spikes expected, drivers can comfortably wait until the weekend to fill up without worrying about paying significantly more.
