Wards 3 and 4 Councillor Martin Medeiros has been nominated as the Ontario Liberal Party candidate for Brampton Centre in the upcoming provincial election on February 27. Medeiros, currently serving his third term on Brampton City Council and Peel Regional Council, has taken a leave of absence from his council duties to focus on his campaign.
First elected in 2014, Medeiros emphasized his decision to run stems from a desire to advocate for Brampton’s needs at Queen’s Park. In a statement to constituents, he highlighted key issues such as access to family doctors, additional full-service hospitals, lower auto insurance rates, cracking down on unregulated private career colleges, and enhancing community safety to combat crimes like auto theft.
Brampton’s five provincial ridings are considered swing ridings, with the Progressive Conservatives (PCs), Liberals, and NDP all securing seats in the past five elections. The PCs currently hold all five Brampton ridings after a sweep in the 2022 election. However, the Liberals are hopeful that Medeiros’s local experience and Liberal Leader Bonnie Crombie’s strong ties to Peel Region—as former mayor of Mississauga—could help shift the balance.
Medeiros’s campaign will focus on addressing Brampton’s longstanding challenges, including inadequate healthcare, education, and social services. His candidacy represents the Liberals’ effort to break the PC stronghold in the city and secure a voice for Brampton at the provincial level.
