Prime Minister Justin Trudeau Celebrates Chinese New Year and the Year of the Snake

 Prime Minister Justin Trudeau today issued a heartfelt statement in celebration of Chinese New Year, marking the beginning of the Year of the Snake. The festivities, which span two weeks, are a time for Chinese communities in Canada and around the world to come together in celebration of tradition, family, and renewal.

“Starting today and for the next two weeks, Chinese communities in Canada and around the world will celebrate Chinese New Year and the arrival of the Year of the Snake – a symbol of wisdom, introspection, and renewal,” said Prime Minister Trudeau.

Chinese New Year, also known as the Spring Festival, is a time for families and friends to gather, share traditional meals, and exchange good wishes for the year ahead. The Prime Minister highlighted the vibrant celebrations that take place across Canada, including the lighting of red lanterns and fireworks, which symbolize good fortune and showcase the rich cultural heritage of Chinese Canadians.

“Red lanterns and fireworks will light up the sky in communities across the country, representing good fortune and showcasing the rich cultural heritage and enduring spirit of Chinese Canadians from coast to coast to coast,” the Prime Minister stated.

In his message, Prime Minister Trudeau also reflected on the significant contributions of the more than 1.7 million Chinese Canadians who have helped shape Canada into a more inclusive, diverse, and prosperous nation.

“As we celebrate together, let’s take this opportunity to reflect on the incredible contributions of the more than 1.7 million Chinese Canadians. They make Canada a more inclusive, diverse, and prosperous country,” he said.

The Prime Minister concluded his statement by extending warm wishes to all those celebrating Chinese New Year, expressing hope for a joyful, healthy, and prosperous Year of the Snake.

“On behalf of the Government of Canada, I wish everyone celebrating a joyful, healthy, and auspicious Chinese New Year. May the Year of the Snake bring health, happiness, and prosperity to all.”

The Prime Minister also shared his greetings in multiple languages, saying:
“新年快乐! 新年快樂! Xīn Nián Kuài Lè! Sun Nin Fai Lok!”

Chinese New Year is one of the most important cultural celebrations for Chinese communities worldwide, and Canada’s multicultural fabric is enriched by the vibrant traditions and festivities that accompany this joyous occasion.
