Mississauga Food Banks Raise Record $3M but Face Growing Demand

Mississauga Food Banks Surpass $3M Goal, Highlight Urgent Need for Support

Food Banks Mississauga (FBM) has set a new fundraising milestone, collecting over $3 million during its 2024 Holiday Food Drive. While the record-breaking $3,042,879 exceeds the $2.5 million target by more than $500,000, food bank officials stress that much more is needed to combat the ongoing food insecurity crisis in Canada’s seventh-largest city.

The annual campaign, which ran from November 12 to January 12, marked the organization’s most successful drive to date. FBM officials praised the overwhelming support from community members, businesses, and volunteers, noting that the funds will provide essential, immediate relief to the one in 13 Mississauga residents who rely on food banks.

“It’s been a challenging holiday season and year, knowing that demand for our services continues to rise exponentially,” said FBM CEO Meghan Nicholls. “We’re seeing more neighbours turn to us than ever before. The community’s response has been uplifting, and we’re incredibly grateful for everyone who donated, volunteered, or helped spread awareness.”

Nicholls highlighted the growing crisis, revealing that food bank usage in Mississauga reached unprecedented levels in December. She expressed concern about the months ahead, as demand shows no signs of slowing. “Our shelves have been depleted by the busiest holiday season on record,” she added. “With no provincial or federal government support, the generosity of donors is the only reason we can continue to serve our community.”

FBM’s network of over 60 community agencies currently serves 56,000 residents, a number expected to nearly double to 100,000 within the next two years. This stark forecast underscores the severity of food insecurity in Mississauga, where record-high inflation and economic challenges have left more families struggling to put food on the table.

“As we move into 2025, food insecurity remains a reality for many in Mississauga,” said Nicholls. “Every donation helps us not only provide food but also advocate for long-term solutions to this growing issue. Food is a human right, and we’ll continue to stand with our neighbours in need.”

Community Partnerships and Corporate Support

The 2024 Holiday Drive’s success was bolstered by key partnerships. Nissan Canada Foundation served as the campaign’s lead sponsor, while the Orlando Corporation matched year-end donations up to $150,000, amplifying the impact of community contributions.

While celebrating the campaign’s success, Nicholls reiterated the urgency of sustained support to meet the escalating demand. “We’ve made incredible progress, but the work is far from over. The community’s continued generosity will be vital in the coming months.”

Food Banks Mississauga is urging residents and businesses to remain engaged in the fight against food insecurity. Donations, volunteer efforts, and advocacy play a critical role in ensuring that every Mississauga resident has access to food.
